Brown Roofs Clean Up the Best
That Woodside roof was brown, and brown shingles show the biggest change of any color. The black streaking hides the warm tones in the shingle, so most people don't realize how dull the roof has gotten until part of it is clean. If your roof is brown or tan and looks gray from the street, that's algae, and it comes off.
What the Streaks Are
The streaks are a living algae that feeds on the limestone in asphalt shingles. It starts where the roof stays damp, which in Aiken usually means the shaded side under the pines, and it spreads from there. Left alone, lichen and moss move in behind it.

I never put a pressure washer on shingles. The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association warns against it because it strips the granules that protect the roof.
