The Aiken Bank That Changed Its Mind About Gutter Guards
The Aiken job I think about most is a bank with a green metal roof. From the parking lot it looked fine. Up top, the gutters were packed end to end with pine straw. I took pictures of the inside and showed them to the bank's president, because nobody on the ground could have known. He had gutter guards put on after that.
That job is why I photograph every gutter I clean. You shouldn't have to take my word for what's up there.
Pine Straw Is the Aiken Problem
Aiken is pine country. Pine straw doesn't sit in a gutter the way leaves do. It mats together, slides into the downspout opening and makes a plug that water can't get past. A gutter can look half empty and still not drain.

Historic Homes Downtown
A lot of the homes around downtown Aiken are historic, and the outside of an old house needs a lighter hand. Original wood trim, older gutters and built-up paint don't forgive a ladder set in the wrong place. I go slower on these homes on purpose.
Farms, Barns and Horse Properties
Aiken has ranches and farms you don't see as much of on the Georgia side. Long barn rooflines and outbuildings collect straw and leaves like any house, and they're usually the last gutters anyone thinks about. I clean those too.
When the Clog Is Underground
Some Aiken homes send their downspouts into buried drain pipe. On older systems with big trees nearby, that pipe can collapse or fill with roots. When water backs up out of the bottom of a downspout after I've cleared the top, that's usually why. I'll tell you if I see it, and I'll be honest that fixing buried pipe costs more the older the system is.
What It Costs
A one-story home is about $250 for the gutters alone, and two-story homes start around $350. If you add the gutters to a house wash on a one-story home, the gutter part comes down to about $150. You get a written price before I start.
Gutter Guards in Aiken
Under heavy pines, guards usually pay for themselves. I install LeafBlaster Pro stainless steel micro-mesh guards with a 40-year transferable warranty, and I always clean the gutters first. See gutter guard installation.
