You can drive a few miles through Augusta and go from a newer house with vinyl siding to a home near Walton Way built with old brick, stone, original windows, and construction that has been standing for generations.

I've worked properties all over Augusta, not just the newer subdivisions outside the city. One thing experience teaches you quickly is that the surface in front of you determines how you clean it. An older brick or stone home with original windows needs a different approach than newer vinyl siding. And some of Augusta's genuine Victorian-style homes require even more care.

Augusta's Red Clay Is a Different Kind of Stain

If you've lived around Augusta long enough, you know the red clay.

I know it from the cleaning side, and it can be some of the most stubborn staining I deal with.

Augusta's heavy red clay content can leave orange and red staining on concrete driveways, sidewalks, foundations, and building exteriors. Once that clay gets worked into a porous surface, simply putting more pressure on it isn't necessarily going to solve the problem.

A recent commercial project is a good example.

I completed a large post-construction exterior cleanup at the new Augusta University bus stop. During the construction process, heavy Georgia clay had been tracked and worked into several exterior surfaces. My job was to address that staining as part of the final cleanup before the project was turned over.

Post-construction cleaning like that isn't the same thing as washing normal surface dirt off a building or running a surface cleaner over a driveway. You're looking at what the construction process left behind, identifying the surfaces that are stained, and figuring out what can safely be used on each one.

With red clay, the goal is to actually treat the staining rather than trying to overpower it with excessive pressure. The cleaning method has to match both the stain and the material underneath it.

That's especially important in Augusta because clay doesn't only show up on construction sites. I see the same type of staining around homes, driveways, walkways, and building exteriors throughout the area.

Older Augusta Neighborhoods Get Dirty Differently

There is another noticeable difference between working in Augusta's established neighborhoods and cleaning homes in some of the newer subdivisions around the CSRA: trees.

Older neighborhoods tend to have mature tree coverage. That's great for shade. It also changes what I see when I walk around a house.

The shaded sides stay damp longer and tend to develop heavier algae and organic buildup. Gutters underneath mature trees collect more debris. Roofs can develop more visible streaking. The side of the house that gets plenty of sun may look fairly clean while another side is noticeably green or black.

That's why I don't treat a house wash as if every home has the same problem.

A newer subdivision with limited tree cover may have relatively straightforward siding buildup. An older Augusta property surrounded by mature trees can have siding, gutters, roofing, brick, concrete, and other surfaces all dealing with different conditions at the same time.

And if you're close to the Savannah River, there's another one I've encountered: spiderwebs.

Riverfront and river-adjacent properties can get an unusually heavy amount of sticky spiderweb buildup on the exterior. I'm not talking about pest control. It's simply a pattern I've seen doing exterior cleaning around river-adjacent properties, and those webs can be surprisingly stubborn when you're trying to get a building completely clean.

Knowing those differences matters when you're actually standing on the property deciding how to approach the job.

Residential and Commercial Exterior Cleaning in Augusta

This is especially important on some of the older homes around areas like Walton Way.

Can you remove Augusta red clay stains from concrete and buildings?

Red clay staining can often be significantly improved or removed, but it needs to be treated as a stain rather than ordinary dirt. I've dealt with heavy clay staining on residential and commercial properties, including heavy post-construction clay staining on a recent Augusta University project. The exact process depends on what material the clay has stained and how deeply it has set into the surface.

Why does one side of my Augusta house turn green faster than the others?
